Senior Thesis Project

Criminalized Condition

Social Impact Design

The Senior Thesis Project for the Visual Communication program at Arizona State University is a synthesis of work allowing students to research a social issue and create impactful designs to raise awareness on the topic. I chose to analyze substance use disorder and the justice system in the U.S. Thorough ideation, prototyping, refinement, lead to the design of my clock. The title of my timepiece, Criminalized Condition, highlights the harsh reality of how substance use is treated in the U.S.—where addiction is punished instead of treated. Rather than receiving the support and care they need, individuals are trapped in a cycle of fear, incarceration, and untreated suffering, reinforcing a system that criminalizes illness instead of addressing its root causes.

Senior clocks were showcased at Arizona State University’s Senior Clock Exhibition.

Project Objectives

Conduct in-depth research on a pressing social issue, analyzing both its objective conditions and societal perceptions, to develop a meaningful design.

Synthesize findings into a tangible, interactive timepiece that visually and symbolically represents the issue, merging analysis with artistic expression.

Develop and deliver a professional digital presentation that effectively conveys the project’s research, design process, and social relevance to a wider audience.

Initial Ideation

During the ideation stage, I focused on visually representing substance use disorder, considering key themes and struggles faced by those affected. Early concepts included highlighted letters forming arrows and an abstract clock with glass shards and a twisting arrow, symbolizing the non-linear nature of recovery.

Ah-hah! Moment

After further exploration, I developed a concept that combined broken glass symbolism with powerful iconography. I refined my arrow idea into a circular form, representing how those struggling with substance use disorder are often trapped in a cycle—perpetuated by a broken system that prioritizes imprisonment over treatment in the United States.
